Safety Management and culture

D&F focuses on optimising safety performance by improving safety management and safety culture. To put it more simply, a management system concentrates on influencing formal culture, while safety culture concentrates on influencing informal culture. In reality, these two systems overlap, and a management system forms part of safety culture. Conversely, this statement also applies if safety culture is controlled as a process. Management systems and safety culture can enhance and reinforce one another. Management systems establish rules of conduct, while safety culture helps to determine whether or not these rules of conduct are put into effect and influences the way in which this is done.

Safety management

A number of management systems have been implemented at most organisations for a wide variety of processes such as safety, quality, the environment, sustainability, or production efficiency. These management systems can co-exist side by side. A great deal of energy is wasted due to the fact that all these management systems are not coordinated properly: this results in e.g. the same work being done twice over or systems influencing one another. D&F has devised concepts for integrating management systems and deploying them more effectively.

Safety culture

Developing a strong safety culture and focusing on safety-related behaviour at all levels of an organisation will have a positive effect which goes further than reducing the number of accidents at work. Financially speaking, companies with committed employees and a pleasant working atmosphere perform almost five times better than organisations where these positive elements are lacking (Hay Group Research Consultancy). Developing a safety culture results in major changes in organisations’ cultures and has many positive effects on health, safety, welfare, the environment, quality, production, efficiency and sustainability. These techniques not only have a positive effect on your organisation, but also on your private life and that of your colleagues. D&F’s philosophy in this respect is set out in the book “Brainsafe”.
