Although many companies regard process safety and machinery safety as two separate fields of expertise, the legislation, regulations and standards for both disciplines do overlap to a certain extent.
For example, a milk factory pasteurises the milk (process) and fills the containers (machinery), and a steel factory cleans up waste products (process) and rolls metal (machinery). These two areas of expertise are traditionally approached and managed separately.
However, more and more people are wondering whether these areas of expertise could be integrated. After a preliminary assessment, we immediately see that there are a number of areas of overlap such as the Machinery Directive, the PED and ATEX 95 Directives, CE marking, technical and user documents, knowing about standards, SILs, organisation during the operating phase (MoC), and the importance of a proper risk assessment.
