Explosion Protection Document (EPD)

Under Article 8 of ATEX 137 (99/92/EC), employers are obliged to compile an explosion protection document (EPD). This explosion safety document must contain the following information at the very least:

  • The locations where there is a risk of explosion have been identified and the risk has been assessed, sufficient measures have been taken to make this risk controllable or to eliminate it, the locations where there is a risk of explosion have been zoned and the minimum regulations in Appendix II of 99/92/EC have been applied
  • The work areas and equipment are designed, operated and maintained in conformity with the prevailing risk (risk-based)
  • The work equipment is used in a safe manner in conformity with the Work Equipment Directive (89/655/EC)

Compiling the explosion protection document

The EPD must be compiled before any work starts. It must be revised if any changes are made at the workplace, or to work equipment or the working procedure. The explosion protection document (EPD) may be compiled using existing risk assessments, provided that these are relevant and correct and that they are in conformity with current directives. You should regard the EPD as a ‘living document’ that continually needs your attention.

Advantages to the explosion protection document

There are benefits attached to having an EPD. Call in D&F to compile your EPD and keep it up to date. This will give you the following advantages:

  • You will have complete insight into all risks
  • All outstanding points for action can be seen at a glance
  • Achieves tangible results
  • Saves you time

Compile your own EPD with D&F

The 8-day ATEX Master Class deals with all the main aspects of explosion protection, and this also applies to the explosion protection document (EPD). Course participants draw up their own explosion protection document: this is the final project which forms part of the examination at the end of the course.
